Laurence Liew is the driving force behind AI Singapore’s impactful initiatives aimed at propelling AI adoption across industries and democratizing AI for everyone.
As Director of AI Innovation, he leads the 100 Experiments (100E) program, fostering collaboration between AI researchers and industry partners to develop and deploy real-world AI solutions. He is also the architect of the acclaimed AI Apprenticeship Program (AIAP), a unique talent development initiative equipping aspiring AI engineers with practical skills and industry experience.
Laurence’s passion for making AI accessible to all is evident in his ideation of the LearnAI and AI4SME initiatives.
LearnAI programs like AI for Everyone (AI4E), AI For Industry (AI4I), AI For Students and AI For Kids, have empowered countless students, professionals and individuals with foundational AI knowledge, demystifying the technology and fostering a more inclusive AI ecosystem.
The new Microsoft Copilot for SMEs programme under the AI4SME initiative will allow 1000 SMEs to accelerate their AI journey with the Singapore government supporting up to 50% of Copilot licences for one year.
His commitment to democratising AI extends beyond Singapore’s borders, as he co-chairs the Global Partnership on AI’s (GPAI) Innovation and Commercialisation Working Group and the project on Broad Adoption of AI by SMEs, leading international efforts to empower businesses of all sizes with the transformative power of AI.
Laurence earned a First Class Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS), followed by a Master’s degree in Knowledge Engineering from the NUS Institute of Systems Science. He also serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the NUS School of Continuing and Lifelong Education (SCALE) and created the Data Science and Analytics programme at NUS SCALE, which is still taught to this day.
